Optimize for Google and Yahoo bots?

I think the gallery will be a great way to get future traffic IF the ALT tags in the gallery are true ALT tags. So, my question is for Brian, are the ALT tags for the images bot friendly?

Has anyone noticed their images being used in Google or Yahoo searches? If so, how long before you started seeing them?

My suggestion is to make the ALT tags VERY visible to the bots, so the images are included in the Yahoo and Google images.

Thanks!

Mike

This is an excellent idea, and I like. I really like this idea, becuase I run a car site with alot of well "girls on cars" pictures and I know it would generate traffic. Its the whole point I have them anyways.

Re: Optimize for Google and Yahoo bots?

Just one question... what would the contents of the ALT tags be? The description? The keywords? A combination of fields?

Re: Optimize for Google and Yahoo bots?

.... and I just tried an experiment. Looks like Google is indexing my gallery just fine. Tried searching for www.coolscifi.com/gallery and got hits so I tried the name of file, "sammermountains" that I know is unique to my site and it came up.

Anybody have specs on whether or not Google actually even looks at the ALT tag or just the file name?

EDIT -- Just tried experiment #3, searching for "skwirlinator" is one of the members of my site. Got all of the public images that he's uploaded so it must be looking at more then just the name. HHmm...

KW802,

Thanks for the helpful info. I think google does more than just the alt tag, but as far as I know, the ALT tags are the most important. Any Google experts?

yes, it indexs alt tags and image title and other elements having to do with the page the image is on (related content).
