Lightbulb Thumbnail Links:

This feature calls for a new BBCode to display the thumbnails of an Gallery Image on the forums.

Of this is too hard, then maybe something like:
<a href=gallery.com/image.jpg"><img src="gallery.com/thumbnail.jpg"></a>

Code:

Re: Thumbnail Links:

Good idea this, it would make user smileys a lot easier to remember this way also

In a similar vein, a customisable quick link would be even handier. First of all, forget [gallery], let's go with [g]

Let's say each image can have a identifier set like a primary key. So the first person can post a picture of a cat and set it's key to 'cat'

One could type [g]cat[/g] and get the picture just like that! I of course see many trolling opportunities as people set the [g]Borgs8472[/g] image and such, but that's half the fun

Re: Thumbnail Links:

Brinnie,

Did you check out that Nail Geek hack I gave the link for?

With your BB code idea, though, you have me thinking. What would be a good identifier to insert in the tags though? Ideally it'd be the actual ID of the image (because the image names, etc. can all change at any given point by the ID never would)..... but it looks like in your mock-up above you may have taken that into account already.

Free thinking, it would tricky but not impossible.... a new BB code that fires off some PHP code to grab the thumbnail link from image ID to generate an inline img tag and then in Gallery a change to the template for the new row to display the image ID. My only initial concern would be possible overhead that having a bunch of these tags in one thread would do. HHmm....

(Kevin wonders off to his lab mumbling something about trying to remember where he put his PHP BB code test from ages ago.....)

Re: Thumbnail Links:

There may be something I'm not thinking about, but I don't think you're going to be able to have a simple tag like that with just the imageid without either doing a good bit of coding/hacking, or having a query run for each image (which I personally wouldn't recommend). If some code was written to first scan all the posts within a thread for the [GALLERY] tag and the imageids grabbed then the thumbnail and other info could be grabbed in one query and thrown into a cache, but that would still be a little tricky and maybe overkill.
One alternative that would be fairly simple though and should only require a template change would be to just have the tag look something more like this:
[GALLERY=imageidhere]thumbnamehere[/GALLERY]

Not quite as easy to use as Brinnie's idea, but would still be easy for users to copy/paste from the showimage page.

Yep, that's exactly what my concern was. I could see something like this being abused by somebody sticking a bunch of tags in a thread.

Re: Thumbnail Links:

Brian, happen to remember if there is variable that get's build with a fully qualified thumbname? $image[thumbname] only returns the actual file name, not the qualified name. Would hate to touch any of the gallery PHP code if I didn't have to....

Never mind.... just found $image[folderstring] (I don't remember coming across that before... very useful )

Edit #2: Woohoo, got it working! I'll post up instructions in a minute.

Edit #3: Instructions at http://www.vbadvanced.com/forum/showthread.php?p=58170
