Physical Album Folders

i was going to ask Brian (or anyone else here that is as skilled as Brian) whether they could start working on a problem/feature i brought up back in early development stage, and that was setting up physical folders for the photo albums.

At that stage, Brian said it wasn't worth doing, but i would like to offer money to have it done under contract, and then have it released it here as a mod (or official addon) to vbGallery - so everyone can use it.

My problem at the moment is - we mostly have 5 photographers for my site, 2 major ones (one being me). We have over 10,000 personal photographs up on the site now, with roughly 5000 photos each from me and the other user.
This means our member_id folders are annoyingly-large.

What i propose, is the ability to choose whether the photos will be placed into the member's ID, or a folder - this being chosen on the 'upload' page (and only by propper permissions set to the user).
This way, it will stop the need to move all the photos currently under member_id, into folders.

FYI - i choose to have the folders as 'year_month_day_-_event' .
this would allow us to backup the site easier, and setup other "little" things easier, like the ability to find photos, or replace them.

If other people are interested in helping pitch in money to get Brian to do this (i.e $5USD or $10USD, or more), hopefully it'll be done soon, we'll be happy, and we can then share it with everyone else.

i have also PM-ed Brian about this thread, so he'll spare some time to read it.

come on people.... you guys must have comments and/or criticism regardin this, and there must be people out there wanting to have the images in this fashion, rather than the vB userid folders.

Personally, I'm torn about the folder naming because right now it's using the same convention as the vBulletin attachments so keeping the same convention makes sense. However.... I often find myself wishing that I was able to set my htaccess linking permissions on a per category basis so that I could allow linking to some images and block others.

Re: Physical Album Folders

brinnie,

right now, you have the folder similiar to 'domain.com/forum/gallery/user_images/{$userid}'

this means that even though 5 different members post images into your image category called 'photos of elephants', each photo still will go into their userid's folder.
it's okay for times like this, that is why i want two options.

the other way is to have "brin's photos", where you know it's only going to be you posting images to it (or you and other admins), and for you to find the folder & photos more easily, you can setup a folder name, like 'brins_photos_cat' in the same area as the userid folders.
That way, when you decide to grab all those photos at once, you can simply copy the folder - not have to view all 4,000 images you have put up under your username.

........

Kevin,
that's why i propose having both ways, the user_id folder, or the folder_name option.

This would be a great idea! My members just had a national meet and many are uploading media from the event. I would love to have a folder where everyone could upload the pictures(and not have the uploads count against there quota) so the same pictures of the event could be hotlinked from the club's site that organized the event.

hey, i have just had this system completed.

i'll be releasing the code shortly as a MOD for everyone else.

That's exactly what i am looking for!

On my site most of the images are uploaded from myself. Now i've got more than 5000 images (including thumbs) in one directory. My provider blocks listing of files using FTP above 5000. So i cannot backup the files anymore. Also i think directories of this size are inefficient.

I purchased PhotoPost because it stores pictures per category, but i am totally disappointed about the product. I've your are used to vBGallery's vB integration then PhotoPost is no choice.

robert2004, do you advance with the mod ?

i will release this within a week.

This should be a default feature as catergories don't really make sense from a user's perspective I've used this feature on Invision Gallery and it works very well "physical albums"
