Hey,
I was wondering if we can have a new Permissions option to allow/disable the Download of an image "files" as per-usergroup.
Let's say I want to disable right clicks, and don't want no one to just copy urls of an image or whatever files, and if they want to get that file, there should be a new link under the Image Tools, where it says, Download Image!
just an Idea, and maybe keep track of number of downloads, and how many files has been downloaded, or how many time this file has been downloaded!

There are so many ways around the disabling of right-clicks, and other methods of getting the files, that it almost isn't worth the trouble.
There is another thread that has a hack to add a "Can View Original Image" permission, where you can limit what groups have access to the "big" version of the image.
EDIT: Here it is: http://www.vbadvanced.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5503 |

ConqSoft Thanks for your quick reply
I didn't mean that there are no ways to get around disabling right clicks, I know there are many ways, but my point was for those who doesn't know how to do that, and I wasn't talking about images only, that's why I said "files" maybe a media file or a zip file!
I don't mind 80% of my members who knows how to view the page source and get the image url or clicking print screen, I don't mind that at all, but I think it's easier for them to have a link where they click it and download the file.
I know it's something easy to do, and I can do it myself but I would love to see it in the next version as a standard option.
again, it's only a suggestion.

If you use the hack above, wouldn't that prevent them from downloading the files you speak of?

sorry, but I didn't say that I don't want them to get the file, I want them to get it, but by downloading through a download link, and not right click and save image as!
Let's say I got a categroy for an mp3 files, and I want to restrict the download of those mp3 files to some usergroup to download, but not viewing the category!
Usergroup A can view category, but can not download anything, where usergroup B can view and download!

You could use conditionals. This will simply display/hide info from your visitors according to usergroup. It doesn't count downloads or anything like that.
Something along the lines of:
- If user belongs to usergroup B
- then display direct link to file
else
display nothing
Alternatively you could find a counter script (hotscripts.com, freshmeat.net, etc) that counts and writes the results to a text file or mysql table.
Then you point the download link to the counter like this:
http://yoursite.com/gallery/counter.php?file=http://yoursite.com/gallery/files/1/picture.jpg
They work like the example above, give or take a detail
