Suggestion: Per Category Custom Fields

I can think of 101 uses for per category custom fields. It would add an entirely different dynamic / function to galleries that deal in very specific categories of things. Just by way of a simple example... Imagine a gallery for collectors, in this case just coins and stamps:

*** Coins
- year minted
- condition
- value

*** Stamps
- year of issue
- plate placement
- canceled / mint
- block of $x

(I don't know much about stamps or coins, but you get the idea.) I think that such a feature would be a great addition to an already strong product. I could and would definitely put it to use.

The only problem with this is that you are given the option to select a category from the upload page, so that would make it rather tricky to have only specific custom fields show up on that page.

That's a hurdle that could possibly be overcome with some complicated javascript that spit out the appropriate text fields based on what was category was selected in the drop down menu. Admittedly, if there were tons of categories -- each the custom fields -- there could end up being a bunch of javascript. I don't know how elegant that would end up being. I do see your point. (I'd still like to see it implemented in some manner or another though!)
