Exclamation Welcome to the vBGallery beta section

That's right, the BETA section for vBGallery is now open!

I've started work on the next update to vBGallery and am interested in your feedback. I don't have definite timelines, but I am shooting for an update by the end of the year that includes the new flash uploader integration found in PhotoPost PRO, bug fix rollups and hopefully a few other new features.

I'll try to keep you updated on my progress and in the coming weeks we'll have some versions for you to test along with me while I do development.

Very nice... looking forward to that..
very important would be:
1. multibyte character support (using vbstrtolower, vbstrlen etc..)
2. postbitfactory in picture comments
3. a rewrite of filmstrip!!! (for the moment there are 2 imagearrays containing ALL the imageinfo of the category.. if we have a category with 20.000 images.. those 2! arrays are far to big.. and there were problems in performance in the past!)

4. a rewrite of editimage
5. voting system.. (there are several bugs.. example: if change vote is on in vbulletin.. change vote is supported in vbgallery.. BUT it cannot be done because before the changevote routine is called.. the cookie is checked and you get: allready voted.

i've done 1, 3 and 4,5 for my install.. so i would put emphasis on 2

anyway, very excited about uploader!

Luc

+1
I think utf-8 support must be because vbulletin support it.

I have to say after having vbgallery implemented on my site for some years, that the members for the last couple of months have preferred to use the default gallery solution from vbulletin.

Even though vbgallery without any doubt overall still is the better solution with much more features - I recommend that you come up with some thing special - some thing that can differentiate vbgallery even more from vbulletin. And fast!

One idea I think could make a difference is to make a superior contest feature. People love contests and loves to compare their own images with other members!

If you take this idea seriously, please get some inspiration from present and previous contest solutions, e.g. from vbulletin.org

Some ideas:

1) You join the contest choosing a contest category

2A
- Each contest category has a preliminary round
- After this round each image competes one on one, like no. 1 meets no. 64, no.2 meets 63 and so on.
- Naturally you in the admin panel can define the time span of the rounds
2B
- the images competes directly with each other for a given time period

3) A hall of fame - each months category winner and TOP ?, each months overall winner and Top ?

4) Maybe give members some kind of award/medal achiewing top-10

Just some thoughts... :-)

Well I had the same thoughts but came out with something different..
I hacked vbulletin so the built in gallery is for buddies/contacts only.
if users want to show images to everybody ==> vbgallery.
So they have one private album.. and a public one..

What would be needed now is transfer pics from one to the other

Yes we agree completely. There is both user and webmaster confusion over where vBulletin's albums feature stops, and vBGallery starts. The next release of vBGallery aims to resolve this, by offering your users everything that vBulletin's "albums" features offer, plus the full-featured gallery that vBGallery is known for. Going forward, even if vBulletin releases a competing gallery (which they haven't yet: their albums release is a crippled-gallery), we intend to continue giving you more for your money with vBGallery and will compete on both features and price.

Suggestions for new version

My suggestions for new version(s) of vBGallery:

1. Link to users pictures in memberlist (I did it in our forum, but I do not know how to put there correct condition to show the link only if someone uploaded some picture already and in that case how to show amount of pictures, that user has). Codes from other templates don't work.

2. Option to place rating of picture below picture (right now it is in the right corner above picture, where it is invisible for users without knowledge of vbulletin interface, which is common for many photographers, who do not participate in forum, but only in gallery). And also option to change 1-5 stars to 1-10 stars. There should be always visible radiobuttons, not like vBulletin's rating system in the present (where are options visible only after click).

3. Possibility of placing picture to more categories (not only to one).

4. Option to have special category containing all pictures from all categories in forum (or from specific ones in admincp).

5. Option to have picture somehow visible on the same screen (I don't mean the same page) together with editor when user is writing new comment. I have complains that right now it is difficult to write comment to a picture, that they can not see at the same moment as editor. What about adding an option to move editor above first comment (from the below position)? And maybe option to reverse ordering of comments (the first one would be the newest one and not the oldest one). Also if someone click on button for new comment, new page with form appear - without any preview of picture as well.

This is the news of the year. I honestly thought VbGallery was on its last breath. I think you are gonna do good because VbGallery is the only true vb based gallery out there. Man, do I hate restrictive nature of vb albums....

RSS feed if possible...

Much needed for displaying images in other places.

(the one in the mod corner doesn't work anymore)

I am really happy to hear that vb gallery is still being worked on.

As an admin, I would like to to be able quickly move/delete pictures when browsing the gallery (eg: http://forum.com/gallery/browseimages.php?c=2) I would like to see a check box next to each picture and then have the option to move/delete all the pictures that have been checked. Similar to the way an admin can move/delete posts in vb.

Here are some more great suggestions from Kirby
More Moderation functions
Quote:
* Inline Moderation for multiple posts/images
* Function to sent images/posts back to moderation queiue
* Function to soft-delete images/posts
* Function to prune images/posts for a selected user (ACP/MCP)

Tagging images or grouping images in a category

I often upload large batches of photos to a category and post a subset of the pictures in a thread. I then tell people to visit the category to see the rest of the pictures and provide the link to the category. If more pictures are added to the gallery, newer pictures will show up when the linked is clicked from the forum.

I would like to have the option to tag the pictures when uploading. When posting a link to the gallery, the tag could be included in the url and only those pictures would show up.

For example, if I had batch of pictures from the 2007 Dream Cruise, I would upload the pictures with a tag like dreamCruise07. When linking to the forum, the url would be something like
. This url would limit pictures from category 99 with the dreamCruise07 tag. If no category was listed, then all picture with that tag would be shown.

Yes, but I think that after 2 months it would be great to read at least some info about progress from developers. Especially now, when vBulletin 3.8.0 is gold and vBGallery 2.4.3 have some incompatibility issues with it :-(.

i'd like to disable through cpadmin all links to vbgallery in the members profile. Now 5 queries are running everytime someone visits another member's profilepage, wether something related to vbgallery is show or not....

My personal wishlist for vbgallery features:
  • Rating from 1-10
  • Brows pics by user (Currently, if you have the overview of pics of a user (in Profile), you get redirected to the catagory xy where the selected pic of the user has been uploaded. So, if you if you select a picture to view it in full size, you can only slide inside this category. And you get pics of other users (that have uploaded pics in that category, too)
  • vbSEO Links for pics by title of the uploaded picture

Is that possible to do?
