Ever since I did the 5.21 upgrade my photos no longer seem to be in the same location. The links I had referenced in posts on my web site no longer point to the links they use to point to, Here is an example. This is what my old link us to look like:
Content visible to verified customers only.
But it does not point to the correct link anymore. This is what the link should point to:
Content visible to verified customers only.
Here is another one that does not point to the correct link anymore:
Content visible to verified customers only.
It seems like the things that have changed is that it now assigns a file number to the photo instead of the jpg name. So is it my understanding that all links that were posted on the web site in the past are no longer good?
The files where moved into there own respective directories
This was for the best of our program going forward
You say the best going forward. To me it was a step backwards. For those of us that have large photo galleries and have other add on programs that reference photos in our galleries. Also those of us that have a very large message base that have a lot of photos in that message base or with references to photos in that message base. The links or references to them are no longer any good. It would take forever to go through a message base and correct all these bad links and to find the correct links. It would have been nice to be warned about this before we upgraded.
Well now since this is all screwed up now I might as well do the switch like I have been thought about now for a long time. I can not believe you made a major change like this not knowing how it would affect us dedicated Photo Post users that have been using photo post for over three years now. I for one use to argue with others that would say PP had crappy support. I would tell them the support was slow but it was a very good product. I don’t know if I would argue with them now since this last upgrade.
I am sorry to be going off here but this really screwed a lot of things up for me. I for one had a book that I put together that was interactive with a web browser and in that book it has links referencing photos in my gallery. I had the book on the web for downloading. It was over 5 Megs of writings and links to numerous photos in my gallery. It took a long time to put this book together. You can not imagine how long it took. Now every link in the book is not longer any good. I have had to take the book off the web so that no one can download it. For those that have downloaded it I have mud in my face because they will find out that those links will not work. It is going to take me a long time to fix and update this book. Yes you guessed it I am pissed off.
Tonight I am going to convert my site to vBadvance Gallery.
I am sorry you are upset but switching to Vbadvanced is not going to solve your issue.
Please realize companies do not code there program to take into account every know outside variable that people are going to do. The links you meantion placing outside the forum is persay outside our hands. Take note if you move an image you are going to have a broken link etc. We can only deal with what is inside our own program and go forward with what is best for our program. Placing thumbs and mediums in there own directories with the same name as the large image is definately a step forward and not backward.
This thread may help you but please realize this is a powerful tool and backup your database
It may have been a step forward for you but a big step backwards for those of us that were using your software to promote things on write online books using the links we created with your software on our site. Your wrong it was in your hands. When your software is storing files in one manner and then you change the way you store them that is in your hands and out of my hands. So you have that backwards. You gave us no choice to either leave it the way it was or change.
I really hate to make this statement but I think vBadvance will solve my problem. I know they will not change things without telling us or they will not change something that will disrupt the way we have been doing things or at least give us a choice. I have used vBadvance software before and there support is just as good as the support here. But I have never seen them change things in mid stream or redue there whole structure.
I do own other paid liences of Photo Post under different names. I may also switch over to VBG in time. But I will hold off on those sites for a little bit. I have not updated those to PP 5.21 yet and I probably will not. If I have to update I might as well switch software if it is going to do the same thing. This way I know I will have a software that will keep the same storage structure.
You can not use VBag as an example since they have not been around long enough to have time to change there structure. Looking at the way they store files they will have to if they are around long enough. They have only have a gold release candidate for 7-8 months. Photopost has been around in some way shape or form whether it be php or perl for many years and it has changed and developed greatly and remains IMO the best program of its kind out there.
It is quite normal for companies to change filestructure among other things. Remember we are concerned with how things operate within our program and do what is best for it. The issue you have is how your linking things outside our program. I sympathize with you and have given you a thread that might help you sort the issue. Not really much I can add here.
Now you have me confused. You say the issue is how I am linking things outside my program. What are you talking about? I don’t think we are talking about the same thing here. I think we are both thinking of something else. So now that I have calmed down a little let me try and explain better how I use to do this and what it is doing now.
Here was what I use to do. I had my watermarking turned on and when a user would click on this link http://www.whiteblaze.net/gallery/wa..._trail_129.jpg it would ask them to open or save the photo. This way they could open it in their default image program or save it to their hard drive. When it open it or saved it in this manner it would put the water mark in the photo.
Now since the upgrade to 5.21 when the user clicks on the link it still ask the user to open or save the photo just as it use to but it does not go to the right photo. It tries to open a photo called “23roll_12-picture_2.jpg”. Why is it now picking a photo with a different name?
You say it is because of the way you separated the thumbnails and the Medium images. You also referred me to a link that would help me fix this. But this link you sent me to is for dealing with the access to the Medium images. That is not what I am trying to do. I am trying to access the large images. But this is trying to access the large image. If you removed the “watermark.php?=” and replace it with “data” then you can see it still accesses the correct photo. Here is what I mean. http://www.whiteblaze.net/gallery/da..._trail_129.jpg.
Why does the not work. It should work the same as it use to right?
Yes the file formats changed but same issue here. Your issue is troubles linking files outside photopost. Just like I explained to a gentleman not too long ago. You do not use a script file as a link somewhere on a site. You would need to use UBBCODE which is a direct link to the image. Watermark.php can not be used since it is part of the IPS system to protect images. There is image security etc so your images will not show outside the program
Yes I know what you mean. But how can you say that Watermark.php can not be used when it was used and working in the past? But it does not work now. What has changed that will not allow me to use it now?
I read that. I am not happy with the answer but it looks like I will have to live with it and as I can see you will most likey do the same thing now that you own vBadvance Gallery. I am not looking forward to that.
Thank you for being patient with me and answering my questions.
OK Chuck. While I have your attention here. I have a question for you. Since you all now own VBG then could you tell me this. Are you guys going to develop a script to convert VBG galleries to PP? If I had know this was going to happen I would never have switch over. So as I see it now there is not since to keeping my forums running on VBG. I would like to switch back.
On another side note. How come I don't get an email sent to me from the threads I am subscribed to when a new post is submitted? Like this thread right here. I have never received any notices about a new post in this thread. I have verified that my email is corrrect and instant email notification set in my USERCP options.
