trying to backup - then upgrade

I would like to back up PP before I attempt the upgrade, but when I try to backup I get a TON of errors like this:

Warning: escapeshellcmd() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/*****/public_html/photopost/adm-misc.php on line 162

Warning: system() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/*****/public_html/photopost/adm-misc.php on line 164

Warning: filesize(): open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/backups/.sql) is not within the allowed path(s):

and on...and on... and on...

What am I doing wrong???

Your host has locked down several php commands so you can not use them

You sure safe mode is not ON on the server?
