Several reasons I can think of:

1. I wrote about 30 free instructions (how to make hairbows, hair clips) and post them on forum. All free but some of them are viewable by members only.

2. Run instructions contests.

3. Use VBSEO

Basically, more useful infomation (free), more people register.
