Empty "Images" column on index.php

I have no avatar images for my categories, and I'm not planning to get any. So on the home page, I have an empty column to the left of the Category names. Can I safely edit a file to get rid of that empty column, for the home page only? If so, which file would I edit? I looked at the template index.tmpl and I didn't see anything there.

In Admin => Index Options turn off the option for Category Avatars.
