Add Image next to SubCat?

There is a blank column to the left of all my sub-categories.

It seems like a little picture should go there.

How do I add a unique picture for each sub-category?

View an product with an image within a category and as admin hit MAKE INDEX THUMB to make it your cat avatar

How can you make a category avatar if the category does not have products?

i.e. you have main category with several sub-categories. I would like to assign an image to the main category.

You need to have an image within the category to have an avatar for that category
