WYSIWYG editor and bold
I cant see bold or italic If I use WYSIWYG editor.
what do you mean by this? Not much I can assist with when it comes to TinyMCE but please expand upon your posting so I can answer. If I use that editor I see a bold and italic option.
I see the editor and the options but I don't get the resaults.
Only plain text
I bet your using vb4. something about the vb4 style doesnt allow strong or italic html tags to parse for some reason. If I turn off the vb4 style things show fine with reviewpost.
Yes, I am that might be it
Yes something about the vb4 style isnt allowing things like strong tags etc to show correctly.
Is this still the case with reviewpost 5.2 and vb 4.1.7?
I can see various formatting fine in the WYSIWYG editor, but they do not appear when looking at the review. Is there any way around this? Lacking bold, italics and bullet points and other formatting really makes a review look poor.
There is a simply quick reply box under a product if you want a full wysiwyg editor one needs to hit POST A REVIEW.
Sorry for the confusion-
The editor works fine and shows all the formatting while you are within the editor and are uploading the original product description for a review thread. The problem only occurs after you upload/submit it. All the formatting is lost when you go back and view it. So, bold, italics, lists, etc are all lost. Basically it's a wall of plain text and very hard to read if you want it to include a lot of information. If I "Edit Product", then the formatting is still there in the editor.
On a related note, is there a way to increase the size of the tiny WYSIWYG editor for the product description as you are uploading a new product?
I haven't tried to add a review yet, I'm just talking about the original upload of a product at this point.
How about you post a url so we see what your referring to where.
The vb editor is only used in one place posting a review
There is a tinymce editor for other areas.
But, here is an example (sorry it doesn't let me post urls yet)
reeftalk.com/reviews/livestock-dealers/p58-drsfoster-and-smith-.html]2g_aboutus_drs.jpg - Reeftalk Reviews
If you edit the description and put in some bold or italics or a bullet list then save, will that formatting appear correctly or not at all?
For example, here is a screenshot of what a review upload looks like in the tiny editor window and what it looks like when you view it.
Your talking about the tinymce editor. There is not much I can say about that since it is an external program not part of our code. You can turn it off and then try various html
I can do bold italic underline etc using normal bbcode
This is just a quick test I did with just our program no external code
I see that the bold bbcode tag works. Does yours work with the bbcode list (bullet) tag? I confirmed that the list bbcode worked in a regular post, but it doesn't seem to format at all in the reviewpost. At least if the standard vbulletin bbcode tags can be made to work, one could technically edit in a regular forum post then copy/paste when uploading a review post.
I don't fully understand the reviewpost/vbulletin integration so this may be a dumb question. Is there a setting somewhere that would allow only admins to use html tags? That might allow for the WYSIWYG editor to function without posing a major security flaw.
I found the setting to "Allow HTML in Product Fields". If you select yes, then the WYSIWYG editor formatting works fine.
Does this setting only affect product uploads for the initial description? In other words, if the only people I allow to "Upload Ads" and "Edit Products" are admins or moderators, would that limit the html risk to admins and moderators? I might be willing to accept that risk for a workaround!
if your allowing html in descriptions yes you want that set to yes.
Like I said we do not use the vb editor anywhere but on a review.
What I meant was that if I set "Allow HTML in Product Fields" to yes, then the tiny WYSIWYG editor for the product descriptions works as intended for the formatting. It essentially fixes the bug I was reporting. Presumably this is because the tiny editor adds html tags, rather than bbcode, I guess.
My question was regarding the extent of the security issue mention in the description for the setting "Allow HTML in Product Fields" to yes. Does that only affect usergroups that have "Upload Ads" or "Edit Products" set to yes in the usergroup editor? If I only allow moderators to upload/edit products, would there be a way for a user who cannot upload Ads or edit products to exploit this?
I now believe what allowed the tiny editor to work was that I had created a review in a regular forum using the normal vB editor in order to save my test review separately. I saved/posted it as you normally would in the vB editor. This post had bold, underline, italics, list bullets, etc. While viewing the posted version (not from the vB editor pane), I selected and copied the whole post. I then pasted into the advanced tiny editor in the reviewpost upload description.
Upon clicking submit changes, this seems to retain the format correctly. You can even edit from within the tiny editor (I'm using the advanced one because it offers a bigger window) and any formatting you add will also display correctly. Weird!
If I manually create content within the tiny editor that has the same formatting, then the formatting is generally lost once you click submit and view the reviewpost. The one exception seems to be underline.
What is the difference? I don't really know, but I do notice this:
In the reviewpost that is copied/pasted, if I click in an area where I had set up a bullet point list, the path is shown as "Path: div.content » blockquote.postcontent restore » ul » li"
In the reviewpost where I created the formatting within the tiny editor, if I click a list the path is shown as "Path: ul » li"
This seems real wonky to me but maybe it makes sense to someone out there. I realize the tiny editor is from a third party, but I now think that there could be an easy fix that would just allow the tiny editors to work correctly. I don't mind having moderators create their reviews in a regular forum post, but it is an extra step.
I can not answer questions about the tinymce editor that is not our program but an addon you can turn on or off.
I will check out if tinymce has any bugs and fixes but that will take time so only thing I can tell you to do is turn it off.
What I need is a workaround to allow all typical formatting, including bullet lists, to appear in a review post product upload.
With the tiny editor turned off, the window to edit the product description is very small and you have to manually add bbcode. Alternately, you can create the review in a regular vBulletin editor and copy/paste the bbcode formatted version to reviewpost. Most formatting works this way, with the big exception of bullet point or numbered lists that I mentioned earlier.
This tells me that it might not be simply an issue with the tiny editors, but some issue with integration to reviewpost and/or vBulletin.
Again, I completely understand that you aren't responsible for the tiny editors, but perhaps someone else might realize what is going on and have a fix that may work. For now, the advanced editor + vbulletin editor copy/paste trick seems workable, if a bit cumbersome.
More information for anyone who might have an idea. I was working with a post I created using just the advanced tiny editor. No formatting but underline was visible once I saved, as expected.
Then, I turned off the tiny editors and examined the post content with no editor. As mentioned, it is all html formatting, which theoretically should not work since I now have html turned off. Yet, for some reason, the formatting still appears fine in posts I copied/pasted from the vbulletin editor.
The difference is this. Even with the editor turned off and html off, this is what the html code looks like with a formatted post created with the advanced tiny editor. Again, only underline appears when viewed. Don't know why.:
So, I copied over some of the html stuff that was added when I copied/pasted from the vBulletin post, tipped by path information I posted about earlier until I found what made it work. I made the code look like this:
I have no idea what "postcontent restore" does or why it was added in the copy/paste trick, but that seems to be what allows the tiny editor to work when you paste over from a vBulletin edited post.
To render html the allow html should be on.
Now I can not comment about contents of how tinymce does things etc as its not exactly how I would format things if I entered html. Like I said I will look when I get some time to see if they have updates but if I enter straight html into our description box with tinymce editor off this is what I enter and it displays fine
I am just using base html and you can likewise use BBCODE.
