Exclamation All Products just disappeared!!!

Chuck,
I have no idea what happened, but today I went into the admin area and searched for "Upload" and replaced a couple of strings like "Upload Product" with "Submit Article". I save those new strings and now ALL of my articles are missing, well they are there in the database and they show up in the Recent Products thumbnails but nothing shows up in the category listings!!!

Even search returns nothing!!!

HELP!!!!

Main Index - Articles to see what I mean...

The variable is "uploadproduct" and the default text is "Upload a Product".

I changed that to "Submit Article" and BAM all of my reviews no longer show up in searching or category listing! WOW! I changed it back for now, but I thought you might want to be aware of this and prevent people from making the same mistake!

I have no idea what you mean changing one string should not affect the display of anything.

Chuck I was shocked as well, but I just verified that is happening on my site, if I change that string BAM items no longer show up in the directory/category listing or in search, if I revert that string back to its original form they all show up again. Try it on your site and see if you get the same results...

Sounds similar to a problem I have, Translated words disappear after translation.

Exclamation

Chuck,
There is a problem with ReviewPost so let me see if I can better describe it this time because I have confirmed that this is affecting other members of my site and I have troubleshooted it with a few of them to ascertain what I think the issue is.

First off when using IE sometimes when I visit the reviewpost on my site (We call it Articles because that's what we keep there) I look at the category view, click on a category to see what is in it and often times either see just one item or nothing at all. That can't be, we have hundreds of items in the category.

Most often I'm using one of these links to look for items on the site:

Recent Products: last day last 7 days last 14 days all products

I would expect clicking on last day to show me any new articles/reviews across all categories in the last day, same for last 7 days, etc. and if I want to see all articles on the site I click on all products. (I need to use the language tool in the admin panel to change that to say all articles, but you get my point).

Unfortunately, that isn't what happens, at least not in IE or in Safari, the strange thing is that FireFox works just fine.

If I want to "fix" the problem, at least for a little while, I can go into the admin tool, go into the language section take any string anywhere, for example "all products" and change it to say "all productss" just add some letter, do something and SAVE. Once I save, then BAM all the articles on the site are now viewable again in IE.

Safari does something more strange. For example if I click on all items in the last 7 days I might get a months worth, I click on last 14 days and suddenly I get only the last 10 days or so (days are not lining up to the number they should), and then I click all products and I see only the last article published and nothing else. Now here's the even weirder part, I click on last 7 days again or last 14 days and they change, whatever they showed me previously now they show me less, sometimes as little as just 1 article.

Here's what I suspect is the problem but cannot verify.

When you went to language strings is when this problem started happening, I mean by that you created a tool in the admin panel for us to be able to change language strings which I think is great, but it introduced some bug that has a different effect depending upon different browsers.

I think it has something to do with perhaps writing a cookie and that the cookie date for "last product" or in my case last article is somehow getting messed up and so it looks through the search and only sees 1 article meeting the criteria, even though I've got hundreds and I've clicked on all products.

I have screen caps if you need to see what's happening but I'm sure if you start testing this with the other browsers you'll come across the same issue.

Looking forward to getting this one fixed!

Exclamation

Chuck,
In doing further examination of the problem and taking screen captures I find that this bug also affects FireFox ONCE YOU CLICK ON ONE OF THE LINKS, one of the links for 7 days, or 14 days, etc.

For example I visited the site fresh with FireFox and clicked All Products.
All products showed up.
I clicked on Last 7 days, and MORE products showed up than from the last 7 days.
Then I clicked on All Products again and only 1 product showed up!
Then if I clicked on Last Day, Last 7 days or Last 14 days only 1 product showed up!

I then went into the Admin Tool
Clicked on Edit Language Strings
Didn't edit anything
Just clicked Submit Changes

Went back to FireFox and clicked on All Products
And All Products / Articles again Showed up!!!

As I started clicked on Last 7 days, Last 14 days, etc. things started breaking again. To fix them again, back to the Admin panel.

Sounds like a cookie issue along with not calculating dates correctly to me.

Ok so i thought I would be smart and do something you'd ask me to do and that was upgrade to 5.1 from 5.0, so I did that and now the search results are completely different!

While they seem to cure, for the most part, the previous ills with 5.0, there is one concern I have.

When I click on "All Products" I get a list, but I have no idea what order they are in, they seem to be in some sort of random order?? What's the story on the new way the All Products search works???

Ok I think i see how it is sorting them, when I click on All products it shows me all of the products from 2010 in Ascending order so the first page starts with something from Feb 2010 and goes down the page to November 2010. The problem is that when you click on Next page you suddenly jump to August 2009 through Jan 2010, so it doesn't make a lot of sense.

It is as if the results have been chunked up and then the chunks shown in Ascending fashion.

Can we please just get it in Descending fashion from Newest to Oldest (or give us a way to configure it ourselves?)

Thanks!

Search - Reeftalk Reviews

They should be sorted in decending order from last product through the first product.

Thats what I am seeing at least.

Chuck,
Try clicking here:

Search - Articles

What you get is 320 Products
On the first page Products are from top to bottom
Feb 19, 2010
...
...
...
Nov 7, 2010

On the second page of search results Products from top to bottom are:
Sept 7, 2009
....
....
....
Feb 6, 2010

Thus the information on the page is sorted ASCENDING, and the pages themselves are DESCENDING so you have a MIXED set of search results. To truly be descending the items on the page and the pages themselves need to be both Descending.

Please fix!
Thanks,
Ken

BTW Chuck I looked at your Site and it is MIXED as well, note your first set of search results are from

Page 1
10/31/03
...
...
11/2/10

See Page 1 is ASCENDING down the page, the dates/times are getting newer as you go down the page.

On Page 2
10/29/03
...
...
...
10/31/03

So again page 2 items are Ascending down the page, but the pages themselves are DESCENDING in that the newest items are on the first page and older items on the later pages.

So yes, a problem in the way the results are being sorted.

I'd like to see them sorted like thus:

11-07-10 (Today)
....
....
10-31-10 (A week ago)

Page 2 picks up at

10-30-10
....
...
...
9-15-10

Etc.

So if you think of all the pages stacked on top of each other it is one LINEAR set of search results from top to bottom, newest to oldest.

How about adding the code in bold as noted here in search.php?

Code:

I did a copy paste from your message into search.php, and uploaded that to the server and ran the search again and this time got this error:

We're sorry, but the system experienced an unrecoverable error. Please try again later.

Script:

Query: SELECT id,user, userid, date, bigimage, cat, rating, title, description FROM rp_products WHERE id IN (346,345,344,343,342,341,340,339,337,336,335,334,333,331,330,329,328,327,326,325) *ORDER BY id DATE DESC* LIMIT 20

Result: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '*ORDER BY id DATE DESC* LIMIT 20' at line 1

Database handle: Resource id #33

Ok copy and pasted your updated code and that worked! Thanks! For a future version of the software you might want to have some configuration selections in the admin panel for things like sort order or how many characters of the search results items returned that you want shown, etc.
