Not being recognized as admin

I tried to upgrading from 2.5.1 to 2.8c and could never get the upgrade process going. It stalls when clicking on the upgrade25.php file. It seems like it is not even trying to open the mySQL database. I even tried putting wrong password in config file and it would not show that it killed the process due to wrong info. I checked, rechecked, triple checked config info which is not much different between 2.5.1 & 2.8c. Also uploaded many times to be sure I had caught all the files. Made sure everything was in the correct place. (Have upgraded many photopost many times without trouble)

So I tried a fresh new install in a new database, I am using the photopost user database with my reviewpost and it is not recognizing me as admin. Also recieved this error at the end of the install -->

Result: Unknown column 'comments' in 'field list'

Any thoughts?

Installed fresh copy using internal user database, no problem, but cannnot use the photopost database.

I get the single mysql error on a clean install but using external photopost database, and upgrading from 2.5.1 just makes a complete mess of things.

Any resolution?
