Issues with showing comments

We upgraded to the newest version and this is what our userbase has posted.

Quote:
Will we still be able to tell when someone posts a comment on one of our photos? I didn't see it when I looked at my gallery.
Quote:
Ditto. I like to read the comments in my gallery, but now can't tell when new ones have been added. Or do I just not know how to do it with this "new" system??
Quote:
Well, I certainly HOPE this can be fixed. I think most people enjoy having a few nice words posted about their layouts, especially on those that have a significant meaning or have taken a long time to complete. Its nice to know one's efforts are acknowledged. Without that message that there are new comments in your gallery, you might miss someone's nice words, especially when they look back on your gallery and post a comment about an older layout. And don't the people who are posting these comments want to know that the person to whom they are directed is at least aware that someone has cared enough about their work to comment on it? Gotta Pixel even has a team of "Pixel Praisers" whose "job" it is to see that layouts have comments. If the person receiving the comments isn't aware of them, what good does it do? The sense of "community" that the sharing of these comments creates will be diminished if this isn't fixed.
Quote:
You are so right, KAPOH! I always enjoyed seeing if my number went up, 'cause it always meant someone left a little love on one of my layouts. And that way I could go straight to that layout and read what was said. Sometimes I find comments on layouts I posted a while back. One never knows which layout someone commented on. I hope we get it back, too!
Quote:
Really hoping we can get the gallery comments back again.... Everyone is right - if comments are made on older pages, we might miss them. Please do bring this one back.
Quote:
I too hope this gets returned! I always check for new comments and delete it back to no comments so I always know when they are new comments.
1. Is there a way to get back the message that used to appear at the top that told them that they had X number of new comments?

2. When you click on 1 days, 7 days, 14 days, (I'm sure I've asked this before) how do I get the # of comments to show up under the date?

Comments are a huge drive to people. This is proven by Facebook. They have built their entire advertising around how many people like or comment to a post. The gallery is the same. Not everyone wants email notifications, so they don't always know when someone has posted to their photo. So... I told the members I would post and ask.

Fortissimo if you use to have some type of hack to add in functonality that does not exist in the program then you would reapply any hack you did after you upgrade.

For example our search script 5 years ago or more use to be handled by the showgallery script but that was along time ago. I seem to recall some discussion when you upgrading several years ago from an extremely old version of photopost that you missed the search script showing the number of comments and you altered the script so it did that for you.

I have never known in our software some message appearing at the top of our product saying how many comments someone has. You need to explain what you are referring to in more detail here as I can only assume your talking about some other alteration to the code you added in at some point.

In regards to the link you provided. Unfortunately you changed the code even more after this and your modification stopped working. We discussed it in that thread with my final statement being

Quote:
Well, just between you and me, I hope you do put it back into the code. Like I have said for the last 2 years, it's something a lot of folks utilize and we have never understood why it was taken out in the first place and why there has been so much resistance to it.
So... I guess this question can be forgotten because I am still not willing to pay you $70 for code that is not exclusive to us and could be rendered unusable with the next upgrade.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Gallery - Digital Scrapbooking Gallery at Digitals

I am giving you this link not because I know that the gallery is up to date. I am giving it only to tell you what was in 8.02, which is what we were at when I upgraded.

On the top of the gallery the following appeared

My Photos · My Favorites · [ no messages ]

When someone posted a comment on your layout, the no messages would change to "You have 1 message". When they clicked on that link it would take them to a page that showed them that X posted on photo X. They could then click on the link of the photo to go to that photo and read the comment. They also had the option to delete the notification so that every time they logged in, if there was something new, it would show.

We want that functionality back. If something just didn't get turned on by me, please point that out...

The hack I posted does work

Search - My Photo Gallery

As far as the messaging system if you are using it as there is a global switch to use it or not then you should get a PM. Likewise is your also in the new email system if you are also using the message system as well as email in your email settings set the message type to BOTH. Your users will get both an email and a PM.

No functionality was removed. You have turned it off I would suspect.

I looked in Global and Use Messaging System for PhotoPost alerts/notices? is marked to YES.

I then went to Email and set "How do you want to Send Mail?" to both.

I then tested out commenting with my admin account to my non admin account, and there is no notice that someone commented. How do you turn it on and where are they suppose to see the notice?

IN regards to the notifications.

I uploaded a new photo under my test account and checked to send email notifications. I received the email fine, but I still did not get any notification through the vBuletting private message system.

You will never get a notification through vb private messaging system as we do not integrate with that.

we have our own messenging system.

In global options the messaging system must be turned on. Then under your mail settings select how you want to send email. Set it to use Both.

You and your users should get an email as well as a PM. Those are the messages your talking about in our navbar. On the site I showed you an example I have 17 messages all PM's about comments on a photo I posted.

I'm glad that your site is working great, however, mine is not and I am posting to ask how to get it working. Please provide that support. If you need admin access to troubleshoot, then ask. I will gladly provide it.

As I have stated. When I go to Global > Use Messaging System for PhotoPost alerts/notices?

It is marked to YES

When I go to Mail Settings > How do you want to Send Mail?

It is marked as BOTH

Both of these are set as you have requested that we do.

I am attaching screen shots. WHERE
is the message for the gallery messaging system? If it sends out a message, there should be 3 for this account as I posted 3 test messages to it's images. If I'm missing something, then point me to where I'm suppose to look.

Again, if you need access to admin account, ask for it.

Enable PhotoPost Message Board?
Used only for internal PhotoPost systems.

Does this need to be set to YES?

Providing a picture shows your issue or url works so I see what your issue is and has nothing to do with settings.

Yes your settings are correct. If you want to show the photopost menubar also. Now we discussed a few days ago the fact you wanted to see the photopost menubar again which we actually surpress in the new version. You can actually make your menubar template contents as I posted for you days ago to see the messages thing we are talking about

http://www.photopost.com/forum/1302132-post3.html

I do not provide support for hacks or mod mods so I can not provide support for that hack we where talking about earlier.

Are you now saying that we are not able to use your private messaging system to get notifications out? Please explain why this will not work.

I am saying if you want to show the actual photopost pm bar you would need to change your menubar template like I noted in my reply to you a few days ago.

I don't want to apply a hack that is not supported by you. I want to use the system that you stated earlier this post is in this release of Photopost (without a hack).

Quote:

I have done the things you stated I had to do to get the current, supported version of Photopost to send out a private message to my members. You have stated that I have things set up correctly. So please explain to me why I must now apply a hack to do what you have stated is in this release. Is this only available to Photopost Stand alone and not Photopost that is integrated with vBulletin? Have I set something up incorrectly? Are you saying that you were incorrect, that the only way that the private message system within Photopost will only work with the old template.

As I stated, I don't want to install the unsupported hack. As you said in the other thread, which I agreed with and created an image to help educate my members, integrating into vBulletin is the right direction to go.

Fortissimo if you want to show the private messaging link that is something shown in photopost that is an internal that is shown on the photopost menubar that is not shown in later vb4 installs you must do the hack that I suggested.

With changes in the vbulletin 4 navigation system and photopost menubar being integrated more with vbulletin we show what navigation for photopost there. we can not show a link in that vb menubar for private messages in photopost. I mean I could show you how to place a link in there navigation submenu that says private messages but it could never show you have 11 new messages like our menubar does.

Therefore you want to show the menubar in photopost which 99.99% of customers would not want to do. I am tailoring my answers to try and give you a solution to what you want.

Well, is there a way to combine the old with the new? To keep the navigation for vBulletin but take the old private message link from the old and place it within the Photopost area (outside of the vb Nav bar). So you would have your navbar for vBulletin/Photopost and direction below that, the old private message code.

I am glad you understand the way things are in regards to navigation. There is no mix or match without hacking.

PhotoPost Pro 8.2 which should be out in a few days may enable you to do something like what you want without it being a hack. Well it would be a plugin but you would be using the new plugin system kinda the same thing as vb. We will enable you to plugin code to various areas of our apps making things flexible for you and easier to upgrade in the future. We would not support your plugins just like vb but it gives you some flexibility more than you have now.

You can try making your menubar template this to try and achieve something like your picture but aside from that there is nothing else I can add to this discussion.

Code:

This is what the menubar.tmpl has now. Do I replace out everything or a certain part?

else
