Directory Permissions

Hi ,
Giving permissions like 777 on data, upload and images leaves the site at a certain level of risk. Is there any alternate options here other than 777 ?

data (chmod 777)
1 (chmod 777 - including subdirectories)
2 (chmod 777 - including subdirectories)
500 (chmod 777 - including subdirectories)
stylesheets (chmod 777)
templates (chmod 777)
uploads (chmod 777)
1 (chmod 777)

This all depends on your host and how they have your server setup. If they allow files to be uploaded with directory permissions of 755 as some sites can then you can try it.

We simply write instructions that are accurate for most sites out there. Most hosts have servers setup to only allow that type of process to a directory that is 777.

So if I give permissions as 755 to the directories (data, upload & images) can our members upload images without any issues or is there any setting in the admin which needs to be changed?

You would have to ask your webhost what they allow or disallow. I was just saying you could try it and see if it works. There is nothing I could do about your hosting environment or its setup.

Our instructions are geared towards novices which is the vast majority of our customers. If you have some experience dealing with server setups then you can work on changing things to work on lesser permissions.

The data and uploads directories need to be 777 permissions.

Like I said it is an easy test to see if your server is setup which way.

I think if you set the data and uploads folders recursively to 777 permissions you will not have an issue.
