VBGallery and VBulletin 4.0

I was planning on updating my subscription, but I have a few questions.

Why is it that VBGallery is always treated as second fiddle when upgrading your products? It seems like it is always given low priority, and very few updates are ever made for the product. Its been announced that vBulletin 4.0 Gold will be released a few days before Christmas, and no word on a VBGallery fix. I don't mean this is a negative way, but would you honestly recommend I drop vBGallery, and just use the simple "Album" function in vBulletin instead?

Thanks for listening

vBGallery has had as many updates as PhotoPost PRO as far as I know - covering all the upgrades for vB. But if you are keeping track to the exact number of releases, then you might know better than me. What I can tell you is that we work to update all our products and given the size of our staff concurrent development is not always feasible.

I just read the vB4 announcement not an hour ago - as I've said in other threads, I don't have a timeline for vBGallery going Gold for vB4 as I am working with others to try and get it updated and with all the changes we are having to recode and redo all the templates. Since we're behind the curve as we were only invited into the BETA a short time ago - it's going to take some time.

PhotoPost PRO was much easier to provide a new template for given that virtually none of the code relies on the vB codebase and doesnt use the vB template system. In cases like this, it's a huge benefit.

As for dropping vBGallery to use Albums; that's entirely up to you, but I would suggest you would be giving up allot of functionality that a Gallery provides that Albums doesnt.

Thanks for your quick and honest response. That certainly has cleared up a few things for me. As a customer, a poor one at that, I was waiting until an update was released for VBGallery before renewing, so I could get the most out of my yearly renewal fee. Money is tight these days.

Thanks again, and I will be checking back on the site periodically for the news of any releases. I hope you send all of us "expired" customers an email so we know when the product is available.

Thanks Again

Harold

Sure thing, Harold. We will certainly be doing that. With any luck we should have something people can start looking at around the time of vB4's release (but we still have a bit to do).

Keep us posted on vbG for vb4.x

I feel the same as you. Since Photopost acquired VBGallery over 4 years ago, Photopost Pro has gone from version 5 to version 7. During this time, VBGallery has had one major update and multiple minor ones.

Its been a while now that both VBGallery and Photopost Pro cost the same, yet VBGallery still lacks many features that Photopost Pro has. I hope this changes and that VBGallery gets a proper re-write and is on par feature wise with Photopost Pro.

Optima that just not true. The facts on vbgallery are as follows. When we took over development of vbgallery it was in its infancy only being released for like 6 months with only version 1.01 and was riddled with numerous bugs and issues we had to fix once we obtained the code. We have went from version 1.01 all the way to 2.5. vbGallery has had multiple major rewrites as it only supported vbulletin 3.0 when we got it. vbGallery has had to be rewritten to support almost every major vbulletin release 3.5,3.6,3.7 and 3.8 and now 4.0. Those are just the major releases of vbgallery where it had to be totally rewritten to support major vbulletin changes in architecture. There have been some minor releases on top of those major code branch releases.

Looks like we have a different understanding of what a "major rewrite" is. I just compared the zip files of VBG 2.4.2 (for VB 3.6) and VBG 2.4.3 (for VB 3.7). Most of the files are the same or have minor differences like code spacing changes, adding prefixes to SQL statement, etc. There are several new files in VBG 2.4.3 (probably for new features), but I dont consider this a "major rewrite".

I also compared the zip files of VBG 2.4.3 with VBG 2.5. Again, there are subtle differences between most files. However, there was a major overhaul done with the code in VBG 2.5, as a lot of stuff was moved into templates, flash uploading and VB album integration was introduced. Even though big changes were made, I still would not call this a "major rewrite".

I would consider a major rewrite to include an overhaul of photo editing (add inline editing, AJAX), make VBG SEO friendly and include other features that PP has. This is what I hope to see (or at least some of it) in the next version of VBG.

Optima yes we may have differences of opinion on what major is

However you posted vbgallery has had one major update and a couple minor ones. I posted because of that statement which is in error.

There have been many many enhancements and new features added to vbgallery since we recieved the code and the code we recieved was very raw so there has been tons of changes since 1.01 version 4 years ago.

Every one of those code branches we talked about the way vb handles things very differently required significant changes to the vbgallery code which results in a specific version being released to support just that version. You can see how the vbgallery download area has like 4 different code branches that have to be maintained. The code is different between the versions. If there where not specific major things that required having different code branches we would just have one vbgallery download that worked on every last vb since 3.0 and we both know thats impossible

I guess there is no point in beating a dead horse. Just please bring VBG up to par with PP and leverage inline editing. Thats all I want for Christmas

To everyone at team photopost, Happy Holidays!

Oh ok, you mean this: Renew Members Area Access ?
I think i will wait for your first beta of vbgallery that is compatible with vbulletin 4 to renew. I hope you send a newsletter to all old license holders when the same is available.

I cannot seem to find a status for vbGallery, is it compatible with vBulletin 4.0? If not, when will it be?

I use vbGallery for a few years now, and I would very much like to continue using it on vBulletin 4.0

How do I proceed?
