500 Internal Server Error when uploading photos

I've seen this error come up a few times in these forums and I've done as suggested...

ini_set("memory_limit", "48M");
ini_set("max_execution_time", 0);

but I'm still getting the error??

One of our users reported the problem so I suggested she email me the file and I'd give it a try. I'm now also having the same problem.
It goes though the process of processing the file (which is taking forever) and then the error comes up. The files are now in the queue and can't progress any further.

Any other suggestions to try?? I'm pretty new to this (our gallery has only been live 2 days now) and have been finding these forums quite helpful when I have a problem. This is the first time I have actually had to post a query so not sure if you require any other info from me. I'm using GD2 not ImageMagick.
