After upgrade to 6 Menubar is not right

Previously I had a link to the forum home page in the menu bar that is gone

And in its place is a broken link to Messages

Ive seen previous posts to edit the menubar.tpl BUT
At some point I must have edited the menu2 directly - where do I find that ?

Whats wrong with the No messages entry in the menubar ?

There is no broken link to messages that I see

As far as any links you hand coded in yes you either edited your menubar template and added a link or hacked your topmenu function in pp-inc.php to add a link to the $menu2 part etc.

yes if you have no messages it says that if you have the messages system enabled sure. It has no link because there are no messages.
