Step 4 Install Error on data directory

I have made it to step 4 in the installation and am getting the following error:
"We're sorry, but we encountered an error during the installation process...

Unable to create/write to /public_html/photopost/data! Check your data directory permissions before continuing.

When you have fixed your permissions Refresh this page to try again.

If you have corrected the error, you may hit GO BACK and try again."
This is the correct path (I believe) and I have the data directory and all of the subdirectories set to CHMOD 777

Hopefully this is just something I've over looked as lame as that would be - I've searched all of the entries in this installation/upgrade forum for data directory permission errors and can't seem to find the answer. I'd greatly appreciate any help you can offer. (I had found a thread that had a similar problem here Can I sell my Photo Post... I am at my end.
but there wasn't really an answer posted except some config issues and a " was missing, but nothing specific

Thanks!

Here are my specs:
OS: Linux (don't know flavor or version)
PHP: 4.4.2
MySQL: 4.0.25
PhpBB: 2.0.19
My Server is shared
I "renting" server space but I seem to have full control of it (mysql, php, etc)

For this PPP install I'm using GD2

Make sure you data directories is 777 AT EVERY LEVEL meaning the mini thumbs and medium directories beneath the subdirectories 1 2 500 are 777 as well

I have checked the chmod settings 5 times now (including a recheck just now) and they are all set to 777 - I have drilled down into the 1, 2, and 500 folders and set all of the mini, medium, and thumbs folders to 777.

Same error -

I should add I'm using cpanel to check and change the Chmod setting - is there a chance it's reporting incorrect values?

I would suggest you view the phpinfo and make sure the directory path it is reporting is indeed correct. Next yes you need to recheck permissions maybe via FTP
