Safe Mode: Cant Upload

Running into the same problems as a lot of others on the board but cant seem to find fix.

Whenever i attempt to upload I get

"Image specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster"

SERVER: This was working and then stopped. PHPINFO says my server is not running in Safe mode howveer the host just sent an email stating they have been working on the server to implement php suexec and that chmod of 777 is no longer allowed. (isnt this safe mode)

Here is their official write up. http://www.esupport24.com/php-security.shtml

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

chmod all your data and upload directories to 755 would be my suggestion. phpsuexec just means that php will now run as you rather than as "nobody", so 777 is not required (and appears to be blocked by your host - mine throws a 500 server error if I try to specify 777). It's not "safe mode".

If you were using any php directives in an .htaccess file you'll need to put them in php.ini instead. Also, if you're using a custom php.ini file (as most of us are I would guess) you may need to put one in every directory, depending on which version of php you're using. Check out http://tips-scripts.com/ for an automatic way to do this.

(Of course I may be completely wrong about your problem - it was only a suggestion :-) )

Basically PHP would need to allow files to be written to those directories and processes to occur thus we set those directories to 777 for those processes to occur. If your host does not allow the process then you would run into trouble. You can attempt to do in SSH recursive permissions to 755 and test but I have never tested the scenerio since we indicate 777 is needed

chmod -R 755 data
chmod -R 755 uploads
