CHMOD problems

I'm using Ipswitches FTP program...I am continually having to go directory by directory, file by file, to change the permissions, especially for the data directory and the directories under it. For some reason they change back on their own, randomly, to 664 or others. I think this is a huge part of why my install won't work.

I am new to sql/php/unix/linux, etc., but quick learner. I just don't know how to get to the command line (unlike DOS!), and globally set permissions on directories that way. Can someone walk me through it line by line. Like, first, how do I get to the command line, what exactly would I type to set all permissions under the data directory to 777, and, would this really work, since my FTP program seems to just change things sporadically.

I AM logged in as an admin with full permissions.

THANKS so MUCH!

Hello

I am not familar with that program although if you trying chmod folders they should stay that way. You might need to ask your host about this

Now if you have SSH access to the server you can use a program like putty to sign in and do a command like this on the uploads and data directories

cd /path/to/photopost/directory

chmod -R 777 data

chmod -R 777 uploads

IPSwitch makes the WS-FTP series of FTP clients.

Based upon which version you have the commands may be a bit different but if you're using the current version then follow these steps to do a "chmod" command...

- Right click on a folder name and choose Properties

- Either in the Numeric Value box enter 777 or click on all of the Read / Write / Execute check boxes.

- Click OK when you're done.
