5.3 new install problems

I just installed 5.3. I can upload pics, but after uploading I get this message:
Warning: copy(/forumhome/photopost/data/500/thumbs/BlueDane.jpg): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /forumhome/photopost/image-inc.php on line 260

I checked permissions in the upload dirs and all are 777. And the pics I've tried to upload are there. But they do not display anywhere.
Any hints as to what might fix this?

line 260 of the image-inc.php is trying to chmod of the thumb to 666.

Per the installation instructions set your uploads AND data directories to 777 and all there children.

Your uploads should then work.
