4.86 Upgrade Fails, stops on blank page

Trying to upgrade from v4.86 to v5.21

Once I hit Proceed to Upgrade -->

it goes to a blank white screen on the following URL
http://domain.com/upgrade.php?upgrade=485&step=1

then nothing else happens.

Same results on 2 different servers, and many fresh download of files.
I am upzipping them on the server, so no problems with FTP upload types.

Seems to be a trend ?? 4.6.7 upgrade just does nothing

Apache2
MySQL 4.1
Php 4.3.9
GD 2
register_globals (tried both)
safe_mode off
no errors in /httpd/error_log

Try this add in bold

Have you downloaded and tried 5.3?

This was with 5.3, your line did the trick. Now fighting a permissions issue 1/2 way through the upgrade script, i'll make a post if i cant figure it out.

Permissions issues are easy check path and permissions to 777
