VB3.5 & PP Integration

I have purchased the latest VB and PP to replace a photo community setup i have have running - before i start installing what the best way to install to get it to integrate the best - does it matter ?

1) VB in root dir and PP in separate subdir
2) both in sub directories
3) some other configuration

i would like to make a front index page which grabs some of the forum threads recent images most popular etc whats the best way to do this a cms like vb portal or just a straight call into a page.

has anyone experience with vBadvanced CMPS and integrating these components how easily can the skins be shared and membership settings etc?

I think best is vb and pp in subdirectories and installing vbportal in the root available here
