"This category does not contain any images"

Hi, sorry if this is a silly question but when I upload a photo it says "This category does not contain any images"? Have I got something set wrong? Tried to upload 5 different photos but none of them are being uploaded.

Are file uploads on?

Does you host require you to have a tmp directory in your webroot like yahoo hosting does?
