Chuck,

I left the memory as is but deleted all the subdirectories in the /uploads directory except for the /uploads/1 subdirectory. That seems to have fixed it. Thanks.

Can you briefly explain why those directories are created and if there is a way to have them removed automatically? Or, is this something I will just need to do every now and then?

If your using GD2 and the upload stops from memory being exhausted the file is left in the uploads directory and then a user tries to upload again and makes the proper bigger cause there is now two files.

You either need to periotically clean out uploads directory but the raising of PHP memory is the correct course of action so that uploads can process or try installing and using Imagemagick which is not dependent on PHP memory.
