Different Category Depth on Index Page?

I want to have a different category depth on the index page than the category pages.

I want the index page to use a category depth of 1, but all the other pages to use a category depth of 0.

The reason is that I will have a LOT of second level subcategories, so I only want them to show up when you click on the related first level categories.

Any suggestions on how to do this?

You can set specific cat depth in edit categories to override the main catdepth setting
