upgrading to 502 from 482

what happens if the server aka site times out on step 3 , and you get the 404 page.
site has tons of images...

Ouch Thats a tough one.

If you have the ability to view the photos table you could see where it stopped at and alter the query in the upgrade script to continue at the photo id it left off at or you would need to drop the photos table and run the upgrade script again.

You said it timed out mid way through step 3

You either need to restore a backup of the photos table and rerun the upgrade script in its entirety

or

find out in the photos table where it timed out and adjust the upgrade script and adjust the query like so adding this as example if it stopped at photo 567

WHERE id='567'

then run just step 3

It should move the files. If step3 does not run or you ran it multiple times your files will show red x's

Yep your step3 was run multiple times

You would need to restore the photos table and then run step 1 and step3 ONCE on the upgrade and you should be fine.
