You ran the rebuild thumbnails from admin didn't you as there would be no other reason why your photos count is 0
I would suggest you restore your mysql photos table and run the upgrade again.

Yep just drop and restore the photos table and then make sure all permissions are 777 on the data directory
Then rerun the upgrade. I have done upgrades with sites with 85000 photos with no issue as long as permissions are set right.

well the upgrade instructions always state to make a backup before upgrading. Lets hope you find one.

Also, on the permission issue, the easiest thing is to set ALL the php files permission to 777, and set your Photopost Directory also to 777. This way, you don't have to check which file has the permission issue. After the upgrade, you may change the permission back to 644, etc...

Okay I goofed. I didn't backup the table. I accidently ran Step 3 three times because it came up with a bunch of errors, and I thought it would be the same as step 2 where you can refresh till you get the permissions right. Well, all the pics are there. Unfortunately, the DB doesn't know what to do with them.
Any ideas?

That is what happened with me too. The upgrade.php file instruction should be modified to let people know that it cannot be run multiple times....
My steps might help you: No Thumbnails - No Pictures
Fixed by steps:
1. Restored only photos table to the database
2. Rerun upgrade from 4.7 - sweating all the way
3. Ran 4.85 Step 1. Skipped Step 2, Then Ran Step 3.

I decided to do it the hard way.
I did this:
1. Ran the scan database with all options. It nuked everything back to what it was EXCEPT for the categories.
2. Manually dumping the photos based on User Number (luckily, the upgrade gave me a clue) back into everyone's upload folders.
3. Sent a message out to everyone that they should reupload their photos.
But yeah, i agree, that step three needs to be rewritten to implicity say you shouldn't run it more than once like in the previous step. It should also be fixed so that those errors don't crop up. They really threw me off when I saw the "Unlink" errors for all those files.
Bugger eh?

I'm in the same boat. Same 4.86 to 5.2 as thorzzzten, same issues as mentioned above. Since my 4.86 backup util failed I just backed up the database using mysql admin but to a single .sql which is throwing me a bit trying to recover. I did backup the entire photopost directory as well so my photos are safe.
This upgrade wasn't as solid as others. In an attempt to recover a little easier, I'm wondering if PP can put together a recovery utility that scans the untouched original photos to rebuild the photo table.
I'm also up for paying for help to get the gallery back up if one of the PP guys have the time. <update>
Thanks to good backups and Chuck my gallery is up to speed on 5.2. Some pretty nifty improvements within the admin area the main gallery has had quite a few details addressed. Nice work.

If only the upgrade on screen instruction can be better written, all these problems can be avoided.

Everything just went to hell. Categories are there, no prob. That's some good news. Bad news is when I try to upload photos back to those categories, it gives me an error:
Warning: imagejpeg(): Unable to open '/home/flooks/public_html/photopost/data/512/thumbs/2wing_tip.jpg' for writing in homeflookspublic_htmlphotopostimage-inc.php on line 121
I get this for every photo and then the regular thumbnail preview screen, but there are no thumbnails. Just red X's. When i go ahead and try to Process the photos anyway, I get this:
Warning: imagejpeg(): Unable to open '/home/flooks/public_html/photopost/data/512/thumbs/2wing_tip.jpg' for writing in homeflookspublic_htmlphotopostimage-inc.php on line 121
Warning: imagejpeg(): Unable to open '/home/flooks/public_html/photopost/data/512/medium/2wing_tip.jpg' for writing in homeflookspublic_htmlphotopostimage-inc.php on line 121
Warning: filesize(): Stat failed for /home/flooks/public_html/photopost/data/512/medium/2wing_tip.jpg (errno=2 - No such file or directory) in homeflookspublic_htmlphotopostimage-inc.php on line 591
Warning: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in homeflookspublic_htmlphotopostimage-inc.php on line 591
Then this in the middle of the gallery:
nable to read the format of file: /home/flooks/public_html/photopost/data/512/medium/2wing_tip.jpg
Any ideas?

Check your permissions on the directories and make sure all data directories are 777

Figured it up. After manually dumping everything back in, and having my users come back on to sort their photos, we're good to go.
The only problem I'm having now is whenever someone quick replies, I get this:
An error was encountered during execution of the query:
SELECT u.username,u.homepage,u.usertitle,u.posts,u.joindate,uf.field2,s.host,t.signature,avatar.avatarpath, NOT ISNULL(customavatar.avatardata) AS hascustomavatar,u.avatarrevision FROM user u
LEFT JOIN userfield uf ON uf.userid=u.userid
LEFT JOIN session s ON s.userid=u.userid
LEFT JOIN usertextfield t ON t.userid=u.userid LEFT JOIN avatar AS avatar ON (avatar.avatarid = u.avatarid)
LEFT JOIN customavatar AS customavatar ON (customavatar.userid = u.userid)WHERE u.userid=2 LIMIT 1
The query returned with an errorcode of:
Unknown column 'uf.field2' in 'field list'

Your VB has been modified from the default vb install
Your would need to modify our vb3.php file and change field2 to the field you now store the user location in.
