| MySQL Connection Problem
Alright, I feel like a newb for asking but I couldn't find info in the installation instructions or in the forums. I'm stuck at Installation Step 3
I've created a database called photopost and a user mapfinge with all privileges. I also added a blank table.
At Step1, I've input the Database Name as photopost, the User as mapfinge and input the pass. At step 3, I get:
We're sorry, but we encountered an error during the installation process...
Could not connect to or create the PhotoPost database.
Be sure your user has permissions to CREATE or create a blank table before hitting REFRESH or go back to Step 1 to check your database settings.
If you have corrected the error, you may hit GO BACK and try again.
If I go back and put in a bogus user, I get
Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user: 'mapfinge2@localhost' (Using password: YES) in /home/mapfinge/public_html/photopost/install.php on line 315
I cannot connect to the PhotoPost MySQL server. [host:$host][mysql_user:$mysql_user][mysql_password:$mysql_password]. Check your config-inc.php for the correct settings and rerun.
So apparently it's connecting with the right user/pass but it can't create tables. I've checked the MySQL control panel countless times and it seems to be right. I see: mapfinge_photopost
Users in photopost
mapfinge_ (Privileges: ALL PRIVILEGES)
What the heck am I missing????
Thanks.

This has already been responded to in your support email.
Please in the future only choose one type of support so we are not double responding on the same issue. Makes our job alot easier

Sorry for the duplication. I'll stick with this thread since I can't imagine I'm the first to encounter this.
Tech support responded, check proper localhost. But host, user, pass seems to be right, cause any deviation leads to an "or die" error.
I managed to have install.php report the mysql error at
line 315 as error:1044. That seems to be related to root access. I tried
adding my IP to access hosts with no luck. I'm trying to get photopost
running on a remotely hosted server using their frontend managers and
phpMyAdmin. Do I need to have root access to install photopost??? Please
tell me I didn't waste $130.

well you responded to the email and I just replied to you.
localhost is definately not a valid host since your connecting to a remote mysql server. You need to make sure the server supports external mysql connections and check with your host on the proper connection settings

And here was the response:
Your error might be in the area of external mysql connections. You may
need to enable this on that external server. basically if you enter the
correct information photopost will install and that error as I state is
telling you that you have entered the incorrect information to connect
to mysql
The mysql host may be the server IP for your mysql server. Your host may
have to help you resolve this as I would not know your info. I can tell
you though if your trying to connect to a mysql server that the host
definately is not localhost as thats only valid for using mysql on the
server the program is installed

Yes I know what my response was I am the same person who wrote you that email.
Do you understand that if your connecting to an external mysql server that localhost is not valid?
As stated you are going to need to contact the host where the mysql server is at and see if they allow external mysql connections and if so set one up. The host is usually in an external setup the numeric IP of the mysql server or account.

Right, I'm trying to transfer the discussion here for others.
So trying to connect to their IP instead of localhost returns:
Host 'puma.shyper.com' is blocked because of many connection errors. Unblock with 'mysqladmin flush-hosts'
What I don't understand is phpNuke was not only able to connect to MySQL, but it created the database and tables it needed. I'll do some more digging on shyper's website though and see what I can find out.
Thanks for your help so far.

Okay and where is phpnuke located? On the server same as Photopost or on the server that mysql is located
If phpnuke is on the same server as photopost you could be able to open up their config file and paste the info from there to the Photopost install program
Either way whatever information your entering before is WRONG

Yeah, I tried that
PhpNuke's says:
$dbhost='localhost';
Coppermine's says:
$CONFIG['dbserver'] = 'localhost'; // Your database server
So I'm really baffled why photopost doesn't work the same.

You never answered any of the questions I asked. Is phpnuke on the server Photopost is on or the other server?
It matters alot.

Oh, sorry. Your wink made it sound like a rhetorical question. Yes, it's on the same server.
Alright, major break thru!!!! (after 8 hrs work)
Photopost was able to access the databases that coppermine and nuke created. It just couldn't deal with any that I created thru shyper's control panel. I was resisting lumping the pp_ fields in with Nuke's, but I'll live with it if it works.
Thanks for the help bud, and sorry for the duplicated messages.
