All of a sudden, getting Error code: 218

I have been bulk-uploading all afternoon. In the middle of the last batch, I received this error:

Error creating thumbnail! Error code: 218

Command:

"/usr/bin/mogrify" -size 100x75 -quality 70 -geometry 100x75 '/home/laurie/public_html/photopost/data/501/1P1010002-thumb.jpg'

5 minutes prior to that, everything was normal.

I am now unable to upload anything to photopost, bulk or otherwise - I get that error every time (as do my members who are trying to upload).

I also have PP Classifieds and Reviewpost installed and both of them are still working fine for uploads.

I have done a forum search here and see 2 previous mentions of this error code, but no resolution. Any help would be appreciated.

"All of the sudden" would indicate a server issue; anything changed recently? Paths, upgrades, something that would cause something that did work to stop working?

macsamurai January 7th, 2005 08:20 AM

No, nothing changed. As I said in my original post, 5 minutes earlier (not even, probably), everything was fine. I was essentially mid-upload. I had been uploading all day. My host has changed nothing. I changed nothing. One minute it worked and literally the next minute it spit out errors. And to reiterate - Reviewpost and Classifieds on the same site, performing the same upload functions, calling the same path to mogrify, continue to work.

macsamurai January 7th, 2005 08:35 AM

Now a different error. I tried uploading again, and to my surprise it worked - 50 images from the bulk upload directory went just fine... so i tried to upload 10 more and got this in the middle of that batch:

Error creating thumbnail! Error code: 1

Command:

"/usr/bin/mogrify" -size 100x75 -quality 70 -geometry 100x75 '/home/laurie/public_html/photopost/data/501/1IMG_0011_001-thumb.jpg'

Hello,

Is it always the same file failing ? or is it randomly ?
Is your host down ? I couldn't access the page linked above.

Best regards,
Interdit

macsamurai January 7th, 2005 10:50 AM

It's random. And happens both when using bulk upload from the uploads folder and uploading a single file from local computer.

Host not down - site loads fine.

Interdit January 7th, 2005 10:56 AM

ok, i could load your page now.

If you have more problems:

Do you have a test account ? like test:test ?
What IM version is installed on your server ?
What software are you using to modify your jpeg files ?

Later,
Francois

macsamurai January 7th, 2005 11:12 AM

Thanks, Francois - I will PM you login info.

Still getting this error (error 218). Interedit suggested earlier today that I upgrade to 4.8.6. So I have done that. The error persists. If I wait a little while and try again, I can generally get a few (sometimes 1, sometimes 50) images uploaded, but then in the middle of the next upload, it errors out and then I can't upload again until it decides to let me - whenever that may be. There is nothing going wrong on my server, and as I have stated previously, Classifieds and Reviewpost uploads are functioning normally (although I don't have hundreds of image to upload to those). It's not a file size issue, the images themselves are fine, it's not a quota issue and all relevant directories have the appropriate permissions. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it errors (since it started yesterday, the first day I uploaded more than 5 images since installing last weekend) and no rhyme or reason as to when the error goes away long enough for me to upload more images.

I am getting angry and frustrated, having had very high hopes for this software, having paid for all 3 products and put a lot of work into customizing the styles and templates fitting them all into my existing site and having my mind set on moving to Photopost from the free menalto php Gallery that I had been using for 3 years with virtually no problems since day one.

If this error is server-related, my host can see no indication of what the problem might be. Since other apps are working fine, it seems most likely that it is script-related, although perhaps script related in conjunction with something else.

I would really appreciate some assistance with getting to the bottom of this crippling issue. I can't use a gallery that breaks on every other upload session. If this cannot be solved very soon, I hope I will be able to receive a refund and I will just go back to using my menalto php gallery or I will begin a new search for reliable gallery software. I obviously hope it doesn't come to that.

PS - The ImageMagick version is 5.5.1

Interdit January 8th, 2005 02:41 AM

Hello,

Well don't panic like that, we will fix your problem ;).
This gallery is reliable, i'm using it since version 3.0 and there is always a solution to a problem.

As, it's working sometimes,

What i can propose, is to give you a free access to another server to test it out, so we will find out if it's script related or server side related.

Then we could check your pics, to see how you save it. (sometimes files are blocking the bulk) Try the bulk upload again without the picture breaking the process. (shown on your printscreen)

Otherwise, you could try to upload with gd.

But you can be right as well, a bug can exist.

Have a nice day,
Best regards,
Interdit

Ps: sorry to insist on it, but i can not always access your page, so if the server is freezing a second, the bulk process will be interrupted.

Interdit January 8th, 2005 04:08 AM

Hi again,

Could you tell me if you can upload with success the single pic causing the error: your IMG_0011_001.jpg (as it's always the same causing the error).

Interdit

Ps: i do remember once, i got a similar error. When opening the broken pic in Microsoft picture viewer, i could see the pic normally, but when opening it through photoshop ( a more complex software ), the soft told me that the pic was corrupted. So try to open IMG_0011_001.jpg with photoshop and tells me the result, before to try the thread above.

macsamurai January 8th, 2005 08:53 AM

1) Thanks for the offer - but I am not switching hosts or servers and the site has not been down, despite your insistence that you are unable to reach it.

2) It is NOT the same image every time, which I think I've made clear.

I'd appreciate help from a developer or other support staff, since I did pay for this product.

Chuck S January 8th, 2005 08:56 AM

Upgrade your ImageMagick software to the current version. Your 5.5.1 is an old version this should clear up any issues.

However you state your host never changed anything yet if I access your php info it was just updated a few days before your thread posting here

Build Date Jan 2 2005 16:44:39

Your issues come from them updating the server and not our software. I can guarantee you see the 218 error using an old imagemagick if you switch to GD2 and try that same upload it will progress fine.

I have seen most php installations of this new 4.3.10 lock down the ability to use Imagemagick or associations of the libraries it needs. Most users need to switch to GD

macsamurai January 8th, 2005 01:36 PM

a) The changes you refer to were made PRIOR to the problem occuring. I only purchased Photopost a week ago to begin with.

b) I had already tried switching to GD2 and it made no difference. That was actually the first thing I did, based on a suggestion I received from someone else before I came to this forum looking for help.

c) you continue to ignore the fact that PP Classifieds and Reviewpost on the very same site, installed at the very same time, DO NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM and also use ImageMagick

d) I will have Imagemagick upgraded to 6.1.8 01 and see if it helps.

Interdit January 8th, 2005 01:42 PM

Hi,

As a photopost customer, i do my best to help others as a community, don't forget to say thanks ;) or hello.

Secondly as you said above, you never did a massive bulkupload with the two other applications, so you should maybe tried that first.

And finally, hoping your IM upgrade will fix it.

Best regards,
Interdit

Chuck S January 8th, 2005 01:52 PM

I just uploaded to your install just fine

http://www.cubeowner.com/photopost/s....php/photo/520

Try clearing your uploads directories of any images as some may be corrupted.

macsamurai January 8th, 2005 02:36 PM

Imagemagick is now upgraded to 6.1.8 01 and I was finally able to upload the balance of what was in the "uploads" directory. If it holds and the errors don't reappear, I will be satisfied. I have hundreds more images to go in migrating from my old gallery software.

Thank you to those who tried to help, including those who contacted me privately to say they had experienced the same issues and also never got solid answers as to the cause or a definite solution.

I saw your test, Chuck, and that was after the IM upgrade. But since the problem comes and goes with no warning and no rhyme or reason, it will be at least 24 hours before I am comfortable saying the problem is resolved.

Interdit - I am not refusing to say hello - you just keep IM'ing me when my away message clearly says "Away." I cannot reply if I am not at the computer.

My site eats about 80GB of bandwidth per month, is highly trafficked and occupies 3-4GB of space at any given time. it's been up reliably and fully functional for 3 years now on the same host, running mostly on free opensource software for which I required virtually no support. It just worked 99% of the time and when it didn't, for whatever reason, the support resources at my disposal were plentiful and immediate. It is admittedly frustrating when I decide to spend a few hundred dollars on a suite of software that should, in theory, assist in making things easier and simpler but instead results in one of the most frustrating and costly weeks I've had in years, as related to this website.

Community support for both free and commercial products is a godsend. But when one has paid for software, one expects to receive more help from the developers and support staff for that software than they do from the user community. For free and opensource apps, I turn to the community first. For commercial apps, I look toward the company who I am sending money to for support.

So far, in reading through countless threads in these forums, I have a seen some common threads - not in the problems people are reporting (many of them are admittedly user-related), but in the way the requests for help are handled. In the week since I purchased all 3 apps, I have already seen inconsistencies in documentation of the 2 upgrades released this past week where the readme.txt included in the download differs from the text in the forum announcement. I have seen a tendency to blame the user for not having the same level of ability as the programmers. I am in a service industry. I own my own very successful consulting business. People pay me to help them. If I treated my clients the way some users are treated in these forums, I'd be out of business. Contempt and fgilure to read what is being written is not a good way to win more customers and i have seen a lot of it in reading through previous forum topics here.

So here we are. If I can go a few days with no errors or with errors that have explanations and fixes that can be implemented quickly, I will be a happy customer and thankful to anyone who contributed along the way. If not, I will cut my losses and walk away.
