Is there any way to ditch the QuickReply input, and use a standard input for the comments?

In admin options turn off quickcomments.

I don't see that option anywhere... When I search for the word "quick" on the full admin option list, I only find:

"Display quickratings under photos?"

Yeah I was thinking that but thats just ratings.

There is no switch but you could delete $comq from the end of the showphoto.tmpl

But if you remove that, there's no way for them the leave a comment?

Wrong what about the Post a Comment Link which is all you want to be there from what I am reading.

You do not want the comments box to show on showphoto so remove $comq and your set.
