Hiding subcategories on the index page?

I was just wondering if there was anyway of hiding subcategories on the index page?

By this I mean you can only see the main categories, then when you click on them it takes you to all the subcategories.

I think TechIMO.com do it, and I would prefere it if I could do this as well.

nvm, fixed it.

But... how do I make it so recent photos are displayed in the all the categories as well?
