Possible to scan and purge all broken images?

I am helping someone who has over 1,000 dead images due to some data loss. This results in broken thumbnails and images throughout the gallery. What is the best way to purge this data? They certainly do not want to do it manually. Thanks

In admin scan database select the option to rebuild missing thumbnails and it will delete whatever images it can not find to rebuild.
