Can I rename a file safely in the Data folder?

I have several files in the data folder that are causing me issues; what happens is that on the server files are case sensitive. So they can have the same name but a different case and they are OK coexisting b/c it's a linux server

E.g. Stratton1.JPG and stratton1.jpg are two different files.

When I do site backups every three days though, these cause errors in Syncback, because my home Windows PC won't let me have two files with the same name.

Can I rename a file in the Data directory or will that blow everything up?

The filename has to be exact in the database as it is on disk if you do not want any issues.
