Thumbnails from sub-categories on main category page

This may have been asked before but it is difficult to search for.

I would like to show thumbnails from sub-categories on a main category page that doesn't contain any images itself. Perhaps a listing of sub-categories and random thumbnail for each would be very nice as well.

Right now when you go to this category, it shows an almost empty page so visitors may think there is nothing there for that category.

I looked around in the settings for that category but didn't see an setting for this. There are Random images in the side bar for that category but you won't see those until you scroll down. And I would like to show more.

Nothing seems to have changed (besides the addition of the introduction text) after updating the showgallery.php file.

There is nothing else suppose to happen. Your showing a category list on the sidebar. If you are clicking a top level category and where using the forum style layout then you would see an index of subcats like this

I didn't see that forum-style layout option yet and I think that will work nicely.

The problem sometimes with so many configurable options is to find the right settings and making them all work together like you want them to.

Yes there are many many options in the software. The new sidebar categories thing is new for PP8
