Apply settings and permissions to all children

Sorry if this question has an obivous answer, but I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly before proceeding. If I edit a category and check the box at the bottom of the page that says "*Check box to apply these settings and permissions to all children:", what settings and permissions exactly am I applying to the children?

1. All setting and permssions for the entire category, whether I have just now changed them or not?
2. All the checkbox settings in the "Usergroup Access Permissions" section only, whether I have just now changed them or not?
3. Only the exact checkbox, etc. that I have just now changed, while leaving all other settings as is?

I hope this question make sense. Thanks for your help!

So its basically everything but the contains thumbs and parent variables.
