how to stop popular and random from showing on categories with thumbnails

Question: I just upgraded a secondary small local site to 7.02. Now I can't figure out why pouplar and random boxes are showing on categories with thumbnails. Before (and the way I want it) the popular and random boxes will show only on the index and categories without thumbnails.

E.g. I want the popular and random boxes to show (only) here *
Index *
-Category 1 with no thumbs *
--photos of x category
--photos of y category
--photos of z category
-Category 2 with no thumbs *
--photos of x category
--photos of y category
--photos of z category

Forgive me, but for the life of me I can't find this setting now. Any pointers to how to turn the popular/random boxes off for x y and z above?

Found it. Looked everywhere twice (but it's late) I was looking under show gallery options where I did not find it. I expected it to be there since I was looking for the option to control popular and random boxes on the showgallery.php page.

However, the option is under Show Photo Options and it titled:
"Display Featured Photos on this page?"
"On larger sites this option can slow down the showgallery page. Turn off to speed up this page."

There the showgallery page is referenced in that description, but the first two times I looked right past it.
