New user group

I'm setting up a new user group so that a few members will be able to take control of a category, run and manage it.
I created the new group in VB4 and then gave them the appropriate rights. Then in PP7 I refreshed the groups and gave the new group the appropriate rights there too.
Now I look in the categories I see this group has upload, comment and other rights in every category on my site. This is an issue as I have hundreds of categories and subs mounting to tens of thousands of pictures.
I cannot see anyway to give this new group rights for just a couple of categories without having to go through every category and remove their rights individually from each category... surely I've not understood this properly and there is a way to give rights for a group to just the categories you want.

permissions are inherited from a parent if you click the apply to children box. If you want to change on just a few cats you would edit those directly.

Hi Chuck I knew that but the problem is that not all of the children have the same rights. If I change the parent and then tick the box to inherit changes all the sub cat inherit the parent and then I have to visit each sub cat and change the permissions again.
What would be preferable is that a new group could do one of the following things:
1 inherit another groups permissions
2 allow all cats for upload, comments etcetera...
3 disallow all cats for uploads, comments etcetera...
4 or be able to overwrite group permissions for categories permissions

Anyway, that said does this mean that I will have to visit each category and sub and change the permissions on every single subcat individually then?
