resizing / disk space

A lot of my users seem to having problems resizing their photos before uploading. I am thinking about using the option "If photo upload width or height exceeds maximums, resize upload down to max dimensions?", but I want to make sure I understand this first.

If they have an 800 x 800 photo and my max dimensions allowed are 600 x 600, what will be saved on my server? Assuming their file size in kb is under my limit. Will multiple copies of the file be saved? Or just a copy at 600 x 600? I don't want it to save the larger version.

Only the photo resized to 600 x 600 will be saved on your site. You set the max dimensions and that is what is saved.

I just tested this and although it saves my resized image, it also saves a second copy in the 'medium' folder. Is there a way to prevent this?

Example: My max allowable dimensions are 600x600. If I upload a photo that is 625x625 106kb, I then see these in my files:

/data/575/example.jpg (55kb... 600x600)
/data/575/medium/example.jpg (55kb... 600x600)

I tried changing "Save and display medium and large images?" to 'No', but then ALL of the images in the gallery were as small as the thumbnails.

Set your medium theshold in upload options in admin to 0 so your not creating medium size images

Thank you, that fixed the additional instances.

How do I prevent the loss of quality? I originally had "Quality setting for resizing/thumbnails?" set to 70 and the file size was quite a bit smaller. I changed it to 100, but then my file size went from 122kb to 318kb... how does that happen? Though it is a larger size, the quality is actually less (comparing the same image -

1) 625x625 132kb on PC, resized to 600x600 318kb on server
2) 600x600 122kb on PC, (not resized) 600x600 122kb on server

#2 is sharper

I'm afraid to change the setting to 80 or 90 for fear of additional quality loss.

If you set the quality higher then of course the file is going to be bigger. The file finally written all depends on what the processor processes.

I'm sorry, I don't quite follow you. I thought "100" meant 100% image quality... didn't think I could get higher than 100%.

What do I need to do to NOT increase the filesize (larger than the original size from the PC) yet maintain (relative) image quality? If the dimensions need to come down about 4%, I would anticipate the filesize to come down roughly 4% as well.
