please post a real site link. You can set catdepth in index options in admin if thats what you mean.

If you want to show subcats and not only top level cats then set your catdepth to 1 not 0 in index options in admin.

Have you tried setting the parent category to contains thumbs = no

Nope on the top level category contains thumbs should be no and the subcategories yes

You can send us a working admin login to look at how you have it set.
