with spider friendly urls, lose the other kind?

is this link a spider friendly url? not exactly sure what it means, so i'm asking.

"like button" or kudos type option, instead of rating?

if so, if we turn on sf urls, will the old links still work? so if i'm linked somewhere to whatever/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=number, will that go to the right photo still?

also, are spider friendly links recommended for large, active galleries? any slowdowns?
