I want the message area to be a bit smaller so that it doesn't break the layout as above. I don't mind removing the similes if that's an option.

I'm guessing its VB who sets the size. But if there was a way to squash it a bit that would be great.

Yes that post form size should be set in vb options I think in your style settings
