Is it possible to set this up so visitors and guests can see the thumbnails (forumhome), but must be logged in to see full size image and/or gallery?

Well for guests to not see the larger images all you need to do is setup this in photopost admin under registration settings set this setting to YES

Require users to be registered to view images?
