Using a "member gallery" category as a way to sort sub-categories?

I like the way that categories set as "Member Gallery" under Category Layout have links up top with "a b c d e.." etc. which let me view categories in alphabetical order by their starting letter or number.

It would be really nice if I could use this for sorting sub-categories in alphabetical order as well.

However, whenever I set the parent of a subcategory to a category set to "Member gallery", that subcategory fails to even show up in that category. Is there any way I can fix this and make it do what I want?

Subcategories cannot be sorted this way; the links you are seeing only apply to user accounts within the members gallery and not categories.
