I edit category for the default view to be thumbnail...
 

and then when I create a album it defaults to gallery.

How do I get it to default to thumbnail view?

I only have one category, member galleries.

Albums are different from categories; they generally pick up the defaults of your Members Gallery category, but are set by each user to their preferences.
