is it possible to add an image or any html at all to replace the text/link of the category name?

i want to add a rollover image to replace that text/link for the category name

could i edit the script because i tried adding html to that are and it did not work.. if i could edit the script, could you tell me what file to edit?

Have you tried using the alternate index layout in Admin => Index Options? I think that might be something you want to check out there.
