How do I use the "Enable IP Cache Timeout" option?

Enable IP Cache Timeout
This variable is used to track IP addresses and userids for voting and viewing purposes. This is set in HOURS. 0 disables this setting

Was wondering if anyone could explain this option or their experience with it. Does it restrict the same person under multiple/duplicate accounts from voting more then once possibly? If so that would be great. If not, what is it for and how can I use it or what would be a typical setting?

Yes it can be used to make sure people dont double post and viewing etc for guests. This option is here for sites that may be larger. It allows you to empty the ipcache table at periodic times so the table does not get huge.

So Photopost by default tries to prevent duplicate votes and runs other functions storing the ip data. This option allows you to clear that data for performance reasons on large sites. Got it.

The default option of 0 seems to be what I want, in essence meaning (ip this that/tracking/monitoring/vote stuff/guest stuff) always on.

Actually, 0 means there is no IP tracking. You can set the value to a day, a week or a month - whatever you want (in seconds).

Ack, good to know, thanks. I might have confused myself by previously setting this to 0.

1. Can you confirm that 0 is not the default or what is the default value for this setting?

2. Most of my contests are in voting period for about two weeks,,, so I would like vote ip tracking enabled for at least this long. So 1 day would be 86400 seconds, so I would set this setting to 1209600 (seconds) for two weeks, correct? Will this be excessive? What is a typical setting?

update: by admin panel says it is set in hours, not seconds?

The default is 0 and it is set in hours not seconds as Michael notes. So if you want to track two weeks you would enter 336 as the variable.

I also was wondering about this setting, this helps me allot, but what would be an ideal setting for this, just an hour, few hours, a day, weeks?

while searching to find out what Enable IP Cache Timeout does, I found this thread.
What do you mean by tracking? do we just place say 168 if we wanted to be sure within 1 weeks time the same person didn't vote twice within a photopost category?
Assuming the admin does not see the ip or userid ?

I thought once a vote was cast, the user no longer could place another vote anywhere within that category from the testing I did so far.

The ipcache would track when the lasttime people where on all that stuff.

This has nothing to do with voting.
