I admit I am tired and it is probably staring me in the face

I want to display recent photos and most popular photos on the main index of the gallery only.

I do not wish to have either of these displayed while browsing a gallery (showgallery.php)

Is there an option for this or do I need to mod the template ?

Yeah go to your admin and select no for this option.

Admin => Show Photo Options => Display Featured Photos on this page?
On larger sites this option can slow down the showgallery page. Turn off to speed up this page.
